Panel & Service Upgrades
More power, safely
Kitchens, heat pumps, EV chargers, hot tubs and home offices all add load. If your panel is full, old or tripping, it is usually the first thing that needs attention before any of those projects.
J Prime Electric replaces worn and undersized panels, upgrades the service coming into the building, and adds subpanels for garages, additions and pool equipment. We handle residential panels and commercial service upgrades for businesses that are adding equipment or expanding.
We pull the permit for every panel and service change we do, schedule the inspection, and coordinate with BGE when the service itself is being upgraded. For homes in Bowie and parts of Prince George's County, we coordinate with whichever utility serves the address. You get one point of contact from the first look at your panel to the final inspection.
A panel upgrade is often the first step of a bigger plan. If you're adding an EV charger, a Generac standby generator or a finished basement, we size the new panel for what's coming, not just what you run today.

Surge protection
Whole-Home Surge Protection
A surge protector installed at your panel helps protect the whole home's electronics and appliances from power surges, not just what's plugged into a power strip.
We can add one during a panel upgrade, or install it on its own in your existing panel.
Installed at your electrical panel
Helps protect electronics and appliances throughout the home
Downtown rowhouses, Murray Hill and West Annapolis houses, and mid-century homes on Annapolis Neck often run on panels that have been extended again and again. Inside city limits, permits come from the City of Annapolis rather than the county, and we file them for you. To confirm
Plenty of post-war homes in Glen Burnie, Ferndale and along Mountain Road in Pasadena still have fuse boxes or small services. A changeout to a modern breaker panel gives you room to add circuits and makes it easier to see which breaker controls what.
Many homes on the Mayo peninsula and along the South River began as summer cottages. When they became year-round homes with central air, electric heat and modern kitchens, the electrical service didn't always grow with them. We check the load and tell you honestly whether an upgrade is needed.
In Crofton, Gambrills and Bowie, the most common reason for a panel upgrade is a new car or a standby generator. We look at capacity and open breaker spaces first, then recommend the smallest change that safely does the job.
Tell us what's happening or what you're planning to add.
2
On-site assessment
We check the panel, the service and your load, then give you a written quote.
3
Permit & scheduling
We pull the permit, coordinate with BGE if the service changes, then book a date that works for you.
4
Install & inspection
We swap the equipment, label the circuits and walk you through the finished panel.
FAQ
Panel & Service Upgrade Questions
Quick answers to what neighbors ask us most.
Still have a question?Call or text any time. We're open 24 hours, 7 days a week. (443) 515-0559
Do I need a 200 amp or a 400 amp service?
It depends on the size of the property and what you run, such as electric heat, EV chargers, a pool or hot tub, or an addition. We size the service after looking at your home or building, not over the phone.
Is a permit required for a panel upgrade?
Yes. Panel and service changes need an electrical permit and inspection, and we pull the permit for our jobs. Inside Annapolis city limits it comes from the City of Annapolis; elsewhere in the county it comes from Anne Arundel County. To confirm
Do you coordinate with BGE?
Yes. When a service upgrade needs the utility to disconnect, reconnect or change the service, we coordinate with BGE. Outside BGE territory, such as some Prince George's County addresses, we coordinate with the utility that serves you.
Can you replace a fuse box?
Yes. We replace fuse boxes with modern breaker panels, and we'll tell you whether the service coming into the house should be upgraded at the same time.
Can you add whole-home surge protection?
Yes. We install surge protectors at the panel, either during a panel upgrade or on their own. See the surge protection section above.
Do you upgrade panels for businesses too?
Yes. We handle panel replacements and service upgrades for homes and businesses.
What if my panel is sparking or burning?
Call (443) 515-0559 right away. If there is fire or smoke, call 911 first. We're open 24 hours, 7 days a week.
What areas do you serve?
Annapolis and all of Anne Arundel County, plus Bowie, Baltimore, Howard County and Queen Anne's County (including Kent Island). We also take jobs in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia. Call or text (443) 515-0559 to check your address.
